ACA Commends Alberta Government’s Amendments to Prompt Payment and Construction Lien Act and Public Works Act

Edmonton, Alberta – November 5, 2024 – The Alberta Construction Association (ACA) commends the Alberta government for its newly announced Bill 30 the Service Alberta Statutes Amendment Act, which will make amendments to the Prompt Payment and Construction Lien Act as well as to the Public Works act. ACA sees these changes as positive and necessary steps toward a stronger and fairer construction industry in Alberta.

By adding the government projects to the legislation, it will provide critical support to contractors, particularly our thousands of small and medium-sized businesses, by streamlining payments, reducing administrative burden, and enhancing cash flow for construction projects across the province.

“Extending the Prompt Payment and Construction Lien Act to all government projects is a vital step toward equitable treatment for Alberta’s construction industry. Ensuring there is a commitment to contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers to be paid promptly on all projects, including those funded by public dollars, is a positive step forward for our industry. By applying these same standards to government work, we can support stable business operations and foster a reliable environment for Alberta’s construction workforce and sector.”

Jason Portas, Chair, Alberta Construction Association

As an advocacy organization representing Alberta’s construction industry, the ACA has long championed prompt payment and fair contracting practices. The Association has worked closely with industry partners and the provincial government to advocate for legislation that protects Alberta’s construction businesses, employees, and stakeholders.

The ACA commends the Alberta government for listening to the concerns of the construction industry stakeholders and taking meaningful steps toward enhancing the sustainability and growth of Alberta’s construction sector. The ACA will continue to engage with the government to ensure the full and effective implementation of these changes and to advocate for policies that build a stronger Alberta.
