Mandated Use of Apprentices

Government of Alberta Apprenticeship Announcement

The Government of Alberta is now requiring proponents bidding on Alberta Infrastructure and Alberta Transportation projects to submit an apprenticeship plan that details how they intend to use apprentices.

Procurements that require an apprentice plan will clearly identify this requirement on the Notice of Procurement, on the front page of the tender documents and within those documents.

  • Apprentices are required to participate on major public projects with budgets of more than $15 million, or those that will require at least two years to complete.
  • A minimum of one apprentice position is also required for each applicable sub-contract valued at $500,000 or greater.
  • The successful bidder is required to report to Advanced Education on outcomes.

General apprenticeship inquiries such as registering an apprentice, record books, responsibilities of an employer, examinations, journeyperson certification and the like can be made at www.Tradesecrets.Alberta.ca or to the Apprenticeship and Industry Training Information line at 1-800-248-4823.
