AB Coalition responds to Changes to Temporary Foreign Worker Program

ACA is founding member of and secretary to the Alberta Coalition for Action on Labour Shortages (ACALS). ACALS is a 25 member coalition of employer groups covering most of Alberta’s economy that advocates for change to federal and provincial immigration policies. ACALS has written the federal Ministers of Human Resources and of Citizenship and Immigration and Alberta Members of Parliament seeking a regionally specific approach to deal with our region’s unique needs. ACA Requests Your Comments by June 10 on CM Supplementary General Conditions

Under the auspices of the Institutional Infrastructure Partners Committee (IIPC), ACA has been providing industry input to the development of AB Infrastructure’s CM at risk contract, based on CCDC5b with Supplementary General Conditions. We are requesting member input by June 10 to add to the review that is being requested of ACA representatives on IIPC. The approximately 30 separate files to review are too large to attach to the newsletter so please direct your request to review the files to shelley.andrea@albertaconstruction.net and Shelley will send you the files. Please also send your responses to Shelley.

Apprentice Scholarships Application Now Available – deadline June 30

Scholarships for students enrolled in technical training in a construction trade are available under Alberta Construction Association & the Jake Thygesen family, within the Alberta Apprenticeship & Industry Training Board family of scholarships.

There is a total of 32 Alberta Construction Association/Thygesen Scholarships valued at $1000 each. They are divided as follows:

17 Scholarships for students in any Construction Trade, who have completed 1^st period of technical training & entering 2^nd period of technical training

8 Scholarships for students in any Construction Trade who have completed 2^nd period of technical training & entering 3^rd or 4^th period of technical training

2 Scholarships for women in any Construction Trade who have completed 1^st period of technical training & entering 2^nd, 3^rd, or 4^th period of technical training

5 Scholarships for students in any Trade who have completed 1^st period of technical training & entering 2^nd period of technical training

ACA Chairman’s Tour hosted by Calgary Construction Association

ACA thanks the Calgary Construction Association for inviting ACA Chair Bob Robinson and Executive Director Ken Gibson to the CCA Board meeting May 3-4. Topics discussed included:

the need for improved coordination amongst industry groups and educational institutions to enhance career awareness and education in the primary and secondary school systems
the need and value of collaboration with architects and engineers to address industry issues including quality of tender documents, change order procedures, and education of owners in best practices for procurement of design and construction services
implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in Alberta
owner utilization of standard CCDC documents

ACA thanks CCA for its leadership in facilitating information sharing of initiatives led at the local and provincial levels to ensure a consistent and unified approach.

Privacy Legislation Compliance Survey

ACA pioneered an employer toolkit and model policy to assist employers to comply with the Personal Information Privacy Act when it was first introduced. ACA is now distributing a brief survey at the request of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner to understand what you require to enhance compliance. Innovation in Construction: Forum 2013 is June 9-11, 2013 at the Edmonton Expo Centre

The Hole School of Construction Engineering invites you to join the nineteenth annual construction forum.

Program highlights include keynote presentations from Wayne Crew, Director of CII, Paul Tsounis, Alberta Department of Energy, Gregory Howell, co-founder and President of the Lean Construction Institute, and Ian Johnston, newly appointed President & COO of PCL Constructors. An exciting addition to the program is presentation of two case studies on two major projects recently completed: The Port Mann Bridge Project and the Heartland Transmission Project.

This year’s Forum will focus on how to innovatively address challenges facing industrial and civil construction in Alberta, and how to boost competitiveness and productivity in the process.
