Alberta Infrastructure School BID Specification Workshop

In recent years, Alberta Infrastructure has shown increased interest in the value of using modular construction to build these facilities, and the Alberta Infrastructure Learning Facilities Division (LFD) has developed specifications for modular-built classrooms and schools under the Modular Schools Program. However, these current specifications impose restrictions that render many builders ineligible and both constrain the competitiveness of the bidding process and deter prospective companies from entering this market.

LFD recognizes the deficiencies with the current specifications and bidding process, and is interested in engaging industry to improve them. In this regard, Mohamed Al-Hussein, from the University of Alberta, agreed to facilitate a series of industry consultation workshops with key stakeholders from the construction industry.

These workshops will pose the central question to industry representatives: what do you need to see in the building specifications for modular-built classrooms/schools in order for your company to bid on projects and participate in this market?

Based on the outcomes of the meetings, a proposal will be submitted to Alberta Infrastructure as a proposed addendum to the current specifications.
